Akhand Path Sahib

What is Akhand Path Sahib?

Akhand Path Sahib is the continuous, unbroken recitation of the entire Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from beginning to end (Ang 1 to Ang 1430). The recitation is done respectfully by a team of Paathis (readers) in 48 hours without pause. It is performed to seek Waheguru’s blessings for peace, well-being, and spiritual upliftment.

Importance

  • Connects the Sangat with Gurbani and Waheguru’s wisdom.
  • Brings blessings for families during joyous occasions (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries) or during times of difficulty or remembrance.
  • Teaches the value of seva (selfless service), sangat (holy congregation), and simran (remembrance of Waheguru).

Maryada (Code of Conduct)

  • Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji must be respectfully placed on a raised platform (Palki Sahib) with clean Rumallas.
  • Continuous reading is maintained — Paathis change shifts but Gurbani never stops.
  • Sangat is encouraged to sit and listen attentively during Paath.
  • Shoes must be removed, head covered, and cleanliness maintained.
  • No interruptions, worldly talk, or disrespectful activities near the Paath area.
  • Bhog Ceremony is performed at the completion, followed by Ardas and Hukamnama Sahib.

Duration & Participation

  • Takes approx. 48 hours (2 days) to complete.
  • Requires dedicated Paathis to ensure accurate recitation.
  • Sangat can participate by listening, doing seva (langar, cleaning, assisting), or organizing Kirtan and Simran alongside the Paath.
