Akhand Karj

Anand Karaj (Sikh Marriage Ceremony)

Meaning

  • Anand Karaj literally means “Ceremony of Bliss”.
  • It is the spiritual union of two souls in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
  • Established by Sri Guru Amar Das Ji, the 3rd Guru, as the Sikh way of marriage.

Core Belief

  • Marriage is not just a social contract but a spiritual partnership.
  • Husband and wife walk together on the path of Gurbani and Gurmat, supporting each other towards Waheguru.
  • Sikh Rehat Maryada (Code of Conduct) guides the proper performance of Anand Karaj.

Maryada (Code of Conduct)

  • The Anand Karaj must take place only in front of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
  • Both bride and groom sit respectfully with head covered and shoes removed.
  • The ceremony is conducted by the Granthi Singh or Paathi Singh.
  • The key part is the Laavan (four hymns) composed by Guru Ram Das Ji:
  • Each Laav represents a step in spiritual growth of the couple.
  • With each hymn, the couple circles Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji once.
  • After the four Laavan, the couple is considered spiritually united.
  • Ceremony concludes with Ardas, Hukamnama Sahib, and distribution of Karah Prasad.

Preparation & Spirit

  • Simplicity is emphasized — lavish rituals or non-Sikh practices are discouraged.
  • Focus should remain on Gurbani, Sangat, and Seva.
  • Families should avoid alcohol, dowry, and superstitious customs.
  • The true gift of Anand Karaj is commitment to Sikhi and mutual respect.
