Sukhmani Sahib

What is Sukhmani Sahib?

  • Sukhmani Sahib (ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ) means “Psalm of Peace”.
  • It is a set of 24 Ashtpadis (sections) composed by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the 5th Guru.
  • Found in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 262–296.
  • Each Ashtpadi contains 8 Pauris (stanzas), making it a deeply spiritual and meditative Bani.

Meaning & Importance

  • “Sukh” = Peace, Happiness | “Mani” = Jewel.
  • Sukhmani Sahib is known as the Jewel of Peace.
  • Reciting it brings peace of mind, calmness, and spiritual strength.
  • It emphasizes:

    • Remembrance of Waheguru (Naam Simran)

    • The greatness of saints and Sangat

    • The futility of ego and attachment

    • The path to salvation through humility and devotion

Maryada (Respectful Practice)

  • Should be recited in a clean and peaceful environment.
  • Head must be covered, shoes removed.
  • Can be read individually or in Sangat.
  • Takes about 60–90 minutes to complete at a normal pace.
  • Traditionally recited in the morning or during special occasions.

In Vidyalaya / Gurmat Classes

  • Children are introduced to Sukhmani Sahib gradually.
  • They learn correct ucharan (pronunciation) and visraam (pauses).
  • Teachers explain the meanings in simple language to connect with daily life.
